Welcome to BirdPics Southern Africa

Southern Africa has approximately 965 bird species and at present there are just over 24,000 photos from 925 species online. The aim is to show a wide variety of Adult Male, Female & Juvenile photos from each species as well as Breeding & Non-breeding photos from those species where applicable.

You can also open the Wikipedia Online GIS Database showing where birders have GPSed their sightings from more than 1,500,000 sightings of the different species. Also, read the Wikipedia information added from most of these species.

Join the 3-D African Bird Atlas (g-Bird)

g-Bird allows you to GPS the location of your sightings so that you can zoom to them in 3-D Google Earth. It also alerts you to possible mis-ids while you are still in the field and have the chance to re-assess their id. This is done by flagging your sightings that fall outside of their known Distribution Ranges.

g-Bird website (www.g-bird.org) allows you to create your Species Lists and export your sightings into different formats. You can also find the analysed results for Reporting Rate Percentages, Distribution Ranges, Abundances and Migration.

g-Bird on your iPhone / Android

g-Bird Mobile allows you to GPS the exact Lat/Long and Date/Time of all you Sightings. It also tells you immediately if your sighting falls Inside or Outside its known Distribution Range, allowing you the chance to double-check the id of the bird if needed.

You can then upload your sightings directly into the database and view them in 3-D GoogleEarth on www.g-bird.org
Search from Apple iStore or Google PlayStore for the FREE-to-download g-Bird app.
